...And In This Corner

… And In This Corner is for discussing up coming events and/or for comments, concerns, and ideas pertaining to any aspect of our association.

It is more for Registered Coaches, Board Members, and Officials. But fighters can send in legitimate material that may be posted as well.

Basically it will give all of us topics to consider and discuss at our next association meeting.

Here are a few examples we’ve already received:

· Annual Fighter Awards—Point System vs. the “Old School Way”

· Scoring—Punching vs. Slapping

· Scoring—Closed Scoring System (Current) vs. Open Scoring System (Olympic System)

· Are WE really doing all WE can to better our fighters chances at the National Level?

Your opinions and ideas can be voiced here. Submit your topics through the form below, they can be kept confidential if you so choose. Just mention that you want it to be confidential when you submit.

**As a former amateur boxer here in Louisiana, I find it hard to believe that 25+ years later that the politics and favoritism still exist in this sport.

I have and continue to witness good athletes loose bouts because of bad judging and poor officiating. In Texas vs Louisiana and now the Golden Gloves Tournament shows. There is a need to make a change in this sport for these young men and women who are competing. I have discussed this very issue with other coaches who are afraid of speaking out because it will effect there athlete. Now if we don't do it now then we can't make a change.

During my amateur boxing career in the military I found that judges showing flash cards after each round can be a deterrent to this. In another case having an impartial judge who will view each bout separately from the ringside judges and has the ability to over rule a bad decision. This is one way that we can make a big difference for all the athletes involved and to educate the coaches as well. Let's make this sport better than what it is now and watch our kids go further.

**Concerning matching I believe that it should be done in the proper manner as the way David writes (seen below under Making Matches).

And as for as the pre-matching I think that it should not be allowed because if I show up at a show I would like to "Think" that I'm not going there for nothing.

Now, on the other hand if the host is going to make sure that every club is going to have a match then maybe something can be worked out such as Tx. Vs La. in Crowley. Everyone has a chance to put there boxers up early to be pre-matched.

I would like to congratulate Guy and the Crowley staff for doing a great job with that show. We just need to "Beat TX." because we meet a lot of them at the regionals. I would also like to congratulate Texas on having the better team.

Now as for as the La.Golden Gloves I would like to thank Ragin Cajun Boxing Club for doing a great job. As for the judging I don't understand why less experienced judges were used when we had more experienced judges & Referees waiting for assignments and didn't get any or very little assignments to work.

Also, remember we are not going to agree with every decision and also we do not always have enough judges.

**In Vinton,La. Adams met Alamanza for about the 8th time. Even though it was a 2-1 split or a 3-0 it was a win with Adams winning again for the eighth time. Almanza has tried and tried again to beat Adams but to no avail. For all eight fights there were different judges, not the same judges all the time. And as for the travesty of judging how do we really know that Ragin Cajun won the other three bouts?

If the judging was so bad why did Ragin Cajun win any of their fights? Did they really win the team trophy? You see when it comes to judging it always looks good as long as it's in your favor.

Punching vs. Slapping?

**I was under the impression that this is what the purpose of the white portion of the gloves is for! If I may say this and I mean no disrespect for anyone, but I have noticed that sometimes there is some biased decision making when it comes to scoring. If we do not do the best job that we can to teach all of the boxers in each of our respected gyms the difference between the two(slapping vs. scoring blows)then we have no one to blame but ourselves!

David(gravelroad)Nelams

**I agree totally, there will always be questions about scoring in amateur boxing. However, we need to remember this for the kids involved so lets be the first to be good sports.

Will Knott

**I also agree with you Will, if we have a boxer who doesn't know how to throw scoring blows the blame falls squarely on us as coaches! This is about the young men and women that we are coaching and we should always let them know this, our time has come and gone. My only desire is to teach as best as I can!

I was only being sarcastic when I made the comment about scoring with the white portion of the glove. I am only here to teach and guide anyone who wants to listen.

David(gravelroad)Nelams

**Remember guys USA Boxing rules do change from time to time, so if you need a refresher just click on the Official USA Boxing Rules & Regulations tab on the home page.

How many of you watched the Beijing Olympics?

We went in there with several gold metal favorites and most of them thought they had been robbed at the end of the fight. The judges were quoted as saying that they were in fact NOT delivering scoring blows. Slapping is NOT a scoring blow. The USA hopefuls had plenty of impressive attributes but after reviewing all the fights several times on my DVR there were a lot of opened fisted blows, "slaps" (Page 70 ii # 4) delivered that were not scoring blows. But you're right it is the coach’s responsibility to teach proper punching techniques. So I will continue to teach these techniques to our kids.

Don't get me wrong guys…I'm not trying to anger anyone I'm just stating my opinion, opinions are just like brains…every one has one. So you can take it or leave it. Good day gents.

From the webmaster...

Just to be sure we are all on the same page I am adding the definition of scoring vs non-scoring blows according to the Basic Rules & Hints for Beginning Officials.

1). Scoring blows. During each round, a judge shall assess the respective scores of each boxer according to the number of blows obtained by each. Each blow to have scoring value must, land directly with the knuckle portion of the glove without being blocked or guarded with the weight of the body behind it on any part of the front or sides of the head or body above the belt. Blows landing as above described are scoring hits. The value of blows scored in a rally of infighting shall be assessed at the end of such rally and shall be credited to the boxer who has had the better of the exchanges according to the degree of said boxer’s superiority.

2). Non-scoring blows. Non-scoring blows are blows which are struck by a boxer:
a) while infringing any of the rules;
b) with the side, heel, or inside of the glove or with the open glove or any part other than the knuckle part of the closed glove;
c) which lands outside the scoring area (on arm, back, etc.);
d) which merely connect, without the weight of the body or shoulder.

Making Matches

**It seems like light yrs. away from the current system, but I remember when things were a bit simpler. All the clubs weighed in and after that was done the coaches would go into a closed door area an make their matches! No boxers around! You didn't ask another coach to look at his kid or feel his arms, you just made matches. It was all done in a very orderly way without wasting much time. The fighters had no say in it and there was no stress in looking at weight sheets for hours trying to make a match or con some coach into fighting your kid!

Call me old school but I believe this way was a better way. There wasn't any watching clubs walk in a everyone else sizing them up like cattle and there seemed to be a lot less miss matches.

Keep boxing,

David(gravelroad)Nelams

Unfair Judging Again!

At the regional tournament for the open fighters to advance to the National Golden Gloves Tournament, I witnessed a bout in which one guy dropped the other fighter and then gave him a standing 8 count all in the 1st round and lost the fight! Losing was not the problem I had with this yes it was bad enough but the problem was that neither boxer received a single point for there work!! If this judge had a problem with our club so be it but PLEASE don't take it out on any fighter regardless where he or she happens to train!!

David gravelroad Nelams

If it were up to me and obviously it's not ,but I would be more concerned about the open scoring system than about rewards for this or that. Yes it would be nice to have one of your fighters get an award for working hard,or winning this or that tournament, but if he or she is in the sport for awards to me this is the wrong reason to be involved in boxing.Building character and self-esteem even confidence is what amateur boxing is about. A young man or woman who climbs through those ropes is going to learn life lessons and hopefully have the ability to overcome anything life throws at them!! This is what sports is all about.

David (gravelroad) Nelams

I was just wondering how the point system will affect any coaches! I always thought that this sport was about the fighter!! Also if a coach is involved in boxing to win some sort of award maybe you're in the wrong sport. I have been coaching for 28 yrs. and not once did I think about an award for myself,if my fighters where given their just due than I was glad!! Boxing is about more than awards and prizes, it's about building character and self discipline, things that will help them when they become adults!!

Biased Judging Again???

We just returned from the Mid-South Seniors Tournament!! I was under the impression that we wanted to send the strongest team possible to Denver Colorado, but apparently that's not the case! We sit back and wonder why our association doesn't do well at these national tournaments, maybe if we sent the best and not the local favorites we would see a change in the landscape. When you have one fighters head bouncing of his shoulders and your fighters gloves are full of blood from his opponents face and they say you were not aggressive enough something is wrong with this picture! Anyway I wish Mr. Armour all the luck in the world(he's gonna need it)in Denver!!!

David(gravelroad)Nelams

I would like to congratulate the fighters who fought in regional and national golden gloves for fighting their hearts out. Also in the JO and Senior Tournaments and wish the ones who advanced to Colorado the best as well as the ones who lost out.

I guess we could tweek each ones opinion whether we are constantly crying about the judging are local favorites and it being more about the teams recognitions than the fighters but in the end we are all still the same team at the big show.

Lets give them hell day in and day out because I agree if it is just about self-esteem and self-discipline then the judging shouldn’t matter because it will build character and make us better individuals. Remember also an award can be an achieved goal, whether it is academic, athletic, or personal.

Another Scoring Idea

I have been talking to several coaches about the scoring and this has been on our itinerary since last meeting and know one wants to step up and make a change well let's start with some ideas Here's one Lets have one judge the Blue corner and one judge the Red corner and the chief of officials scores the bout also and has the right to overturn the decision if He believes obvious foul-play are wrong decision due to judge giving ridiculous score, etc. This would help evaluate our Judges, Get rid of the clicks, brother-n-law scoring, crooks and also let coaches know which judge to pull on his matches. It would be easier to make judges schedule also help on judge shortages and we would vote on back up judges who can overturn in case our chief of officials and asst chiefs are not present and it would make it easier for a judge to count one corner instead of 2. The chief official would only overturn matches He sees fit before the cards are read out.Lets try it one tournament and tweak it from there it will keep a judge on his toes and help train the ones with Basketball scores. for example 69 to 38.

August 14, 2009

Hey everyone,

My son Timothy Nelams wanted me to tell everyone hello from the Marine boot camp. He told me in his latest letter that he can't wait to get back into action! The Marine boxing coach has contacted him and said he would love to have him on their team.

He also said that he misses the shows and everyone's company. The discipline that he has from boxing has made basic training a whole lot easier.

He is currently in Parris Island,S.C. and will be graduating on Oct 2nd.

This is coming from me, I only ask that you pray for him!!

Sincerely,

David(gravelroad)Nelams

The "Irish" McNeil/George Dement/Jamie Phills Opened Amatuer Boxing Invitational will become an annual event, and Jerry Stephens is hoping for a good turn-out with special guest speaker Kenny "the Kid" McKinney and others he's trying to contact. It would be also another opportunity for this organization to invite the boxing organizations from Texas to participate in two annual events (Crowley and Shreveport) due to their location. This would be more beneficial to our athletes due to the level of competition. Just a thought.
