The new Elite Boxing Academy of Alexandria recently returned from Ripley, Tenn., with five national belts. We Left with six boxers and came back with five national belts," said Elite coach John Scott. "That is a greater percentage than any other club has ever done in a single national tournament in Louisiana."
Antonio "El Torito" Valenzuela of Alexandria, competing in the 12-year-old, 95-pound class, was the only fighter in the open division and won for the second straight year, solidifying his No. 1 national ranking. "It was a close first round but after the second and third rounds of giving the other fighter blistering body punches, I knew Antonio was a winner," Scott said.
James Burns, a recent Marine war veteran from Alexandria, won at age 23, 132-pound novice class even after a near death accident last year, falling from a roof top that kept him away from training for more than nine months. "James is a Marine -- that's all that needs to be said about his ability to want to overcome the doubtful," Heath "Little Rocky" Nichols, Burns' cousin, said.
Devonte Johnson of Alexandria, who has been boxing for only four months, won in the 14-year-old, 90-pound novice class with a blow-to-blow close decision that kept most on lookers excited till the end. Issac Squires of Deville (12--95 novice class) won unopposed after his fighter became a no-show in the finals.
Timothy Morris of Ruby (12--119 novice class) also won unopposed after several fighters in his division decided not to box against him, giving him the national title. Kade Anderson of Alexandria (12--75 novice class) lost in the finals in a split decision that had many boxing fans from around the country confused over the controversial decision. "It hurts to lose, but I felt I did good after only being in boxing for six months," Anderson said.
Elite Boxing Academy, Alexandria's only professionally trained and competing boxing gym, is located behind Kyle's collision Center on the corner of Bolton and Lee street. It is owned and operated by John Valenzuela.
Scott, a New Orleans native, is a boxing veteran both in the amateur ranks and the professional level. An Army veteran and a former military, President’s Cup Silver Medalist, having had the opportunity to train at the Olympic Training Center and Golden gloves boxer, he fought in the 1970s,1980s and into the early '90s, when he fought professionally until deciding to retire and follow his goal to coach young kids.
"I teach the 3 D's method -- dedication, desire and discipline," said Scott. "With those three things, we can take a kid, man or woman and mold them into a competing boxer. I'm grateful for the past two years to have great talented athletes that I have trained since I've been here."
Scott said many in Alexandria don't realize there is a lot of hidden talent here.

Ten year old, Jessie "The Giant killer" Fletcher, a rising fifth grader at S.J. Montgomery Elementary School took the 80 lb., 10-11 age group In Memphis, Tennessee tonight in the TITLE National Boxing Tournament. Jessie forced the referee to halt the bout in round two, after pinning his opponent, Eugene Collins of Memphis, on the ropes and landing a flurry of unanswered punches, which had Collins woobly.

LAFAYETTE & RAGIN’ CAJUN BOXING CLUB TO HOST
‘TAKE DAT’ LOUISIANA GOLDEN GLOVES CHAMPIONSHIPS
LAFAYETTE – The city of Lafayette and the Ragin’ Cajun Amateur Boxing Club, in conjunction with the Lafayette Convention & Visitors Commission and the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, will host the annual Louisiana Golden Gloves amateur boxing championships March 26-28 at the N.P. Moss Middle School Gymnasium.
And the event could be a preview of bigger things to come, according to Ragin’ Cajun Club coach and tournament coordinator Beau Williford.
The Lafayette entities will be making a bid in April to host the 2012 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, one of the nation’s oldest and most esteemed amateur sporting events, and Williford said that a good showing at this year’s state tournament could help with that proposal.
“Our national president, Ray Rodgers, is coming in for our state tournament,” Williford said. “He’s here to basically make sure we know what we’re doing before we go about bidding on the national event, but he also wants to see if we have good public response and support, what kind of support we’ll have for the state tournament … they don’t want a national Golden Gloves championship with nobody there.”
“We feel really good that we’ll get the bid, and he (Rodgers) is high on our chances, but we still have to make a good showing here.”
The state event, dubbed the “Take Dat” Golden Gloves, is being held for the fourth consecutive year in Lafayette. The three-day championships was scheduled for the Lafayette High gym, but has been moved to N.P. Moss due to the March 27 special election. The LHS gym is a polling place.
“We’re lucky that N.P. Moss is one of the few schools that isn’t a polling place,” Williford said. “It’s a great facility for this event.”
The state event will feature 11 weight classes from 106 pounds up to the over-201 pounds in the open division, and will also have divisions for youths age eight and up as well as a masters division for amateurs age 35 and over. Williford said the younger classes and the masters’ events are traditionally among the most popular with fans.
Winners of state titles will advance to the Mid-South Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, to be held April 8-10 in Little Rock, Ark. This year’s National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions is also scheduled for Little Rock, May 3-8, and the local committee will be making their bid for the 2012 nationals on May 6. The 2011 nationals will be held in Indianapolis.

RAGIN' CAJUNS WIN TROPHY!
March 6, 2010, Kenner, LA.
The Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club of Lafayette, LA. traveled to Kenner, LA. (New Orleans) and won five of their seven bouts to take home the team trophy.
Eleven year-old, Dylan Landry, a sixth grader at Prairie Elementary, started the evening off with a hard fought decision over Hector Edmond of Breaux Bros. Creole Boxing Club in the 75 lb. weight division.
Twelve year-old, Eric Bui a Scott Middle student lost a very close hard fought match to Shane Sellers of Sorrento.
Hunter Marvin, a fourteen year-old high school freshman dazzled the sold out crowd with his speed, power and great boxing technique and defeated Rudy Garcia of Gulfport, MS.in the 118 weight division.
Shay Lambright (193 lbs.)out boxed and out fought Kyle Smith in an exciting match-up.
Eugene Broussard (127 lbs.) lost an exciting decision to Gary Riley of Baton Rouge. Broussard was dropped twice in the first round by straight left hand by the southpaw, Riley. Broussard arose from both knockdowns to nearly pull out a win.
Fourteen year-old, Cade Duckworth, a freshman in the gifted classes at Lafayette High, easily defeated J.W. McCoy, of Sorrento in the 118 lb. division.
Wilfred Fuselier (201 lbs.) won a bout that was named the Fight of the Night over Dominick Valera (221 lbs.) of New Orleans. The heavier Valera, tried to out-muscle Fuselier and rough Wil up on the inside. Fuselier pounded the body on the inside and used his left jab and hard right hand to keep Valera where he wanted him. The judges voted unanimously for Fuselier.
In preparation for the Louisiana State Golden Gloves the Ragin Cajun boxers will travel to Houma, LA. next Saturday for boxing matches.
The Louisiana State Golden Gloves will be held March 26, 27 & 28th. of March, at the NEW, N.P. Moss Middle school, located at 805 Teurlings Drive, in Lafayette.
Eleven year-old Riley Romero (114 lbs.) had his amateur debut and won a unanimous three round decision over Brandon Rose of Larose, LA.. Romero used his terrific left jab and a very hard right hand to control the bout and take a 3-0 decision.
Fifteen year-old Chance Fontenot (115 lbs.), a freshman at Breaux Bridge High won a unanimous decision over Rudy Garcia of Pascagoula, MS.. Garcia was having his first bout in the USA after an extensive amateur boxing career in Puerto Rico. Fontenot was just to slick and busy for Garcia.
Cade Duckworth (118 lbs.), a fourteen year-old freshman in the gifted program at Lafayette High was magnificent in his bout with J.W. McCoy of Baton Rouge. Duckworth started the bout fast and was landing punches at will, that had McCoy's nose pouring blood. The referee stopped the bout for the ringside physician to check the damage, and Dr. Hamsa ordered the bout halted in the first round.
Smokey Guidry (165), won his bout over Calvin Paul of Baton Rouge, on the judges scorecards and then lost by disqualification for unsportsmanlike conduct. Guidry and Paul got into a shouting and shoving confrontation after the bout and Guidry would not listen to the referee. Coach Beau Williford stated "Smokey clearly won the bout and then let himself get drawn into a near brawl and got disqualified and deserved the DQ".
New Weight Classes for Senior Male and Open Female Divisions
These new weight classes should be used for all shows and tournaments effective 1/1/10. Please call Stan Nichols if you have any questions.601-625-7055 or 601-668-6779.
Jay 'Soldier Ant Gauthier' advanced to the National Silver Glove Tournament and won the first night against Jory Songer in a 5-0 decision in the 60 lb 10 and 11 year-old bracket, but lost to the scale the next morning by 2 ounces. Jay's weight was 60.2 and the weigh deadline was at 9 am unlike the day before at 10 am. Our Region was weighed in all most last both days which started at 7 am leaving very little time to make weight although Coach Gauthier, Shelton Leblanc, and Chief Official did everything they could to help Jay get down. We ran on treadmill with Abolene Cream and a trash bag, in and out bathroom but could not get those last 2 ounces. On the trial scale Gauthier’s weight read 60.0 the official scale read 60.2. Along with the snowing outside and the crowded training area it just wasn't meant to be. At least the Team came through with 3 National Champions and Gauthier a Semi-Finalist. Gauthier did better than last year as a Quarter- Finalist. It was a great experience and Coach Gauthier definitely learned a lot about trying to get that weight down from the other coaches. We just started the process a little to late. Coach Gauthier takes the full blame for Jay not losing those last 2 ounces. We will be training hard for the remainder of the year.
Thanks Jody Gauthier

Beldon E. Fox, Jr. was surely smiling down from HEAVEN as he watched his Ragin' Cajun Amateur Boxing Club win eight of nine matches they participated in on Saturday afternoon (12-19-09) in Lafayette. Beldon was a member of the board of directors of the club and and a huge inspiration to all the young men and women who he came into contact with. The boxing show was dedicated to his memory and a final TEN COUNT was done in Beldon's honor.
RESULTS:
Nick Jones (Daly's, Lake Charles) defeated Donovan Cormier (Frog Capitol, Rayne) 132lbs.
Jay 'Soldier Ant' Gauthier just returned from the PAL National Championships in San Antonio, TX. Jay beat Texas in the semi- finals defeating Isiah Rodriguez 29 to 18 in the semi-finals. Then lost 5 to 3 in the finals to Tyler Price from Philadelphia, in which Jay threw twice as many punches in this bout and boxed a weaker opponent. Jay was not given 1 point in the first or third round and three in the second. You figure it out...but it was an honor to compete there. Jay is now looking forward to Silver Gloves.
We need to try to get as many of our teams to go to these tournaments or we will continue to get treated unfair in these decisions. During the year Jay was able to accumulate 72 points in our Association point system with 8 first place wins, and 2 second place wins.

MOODY IN THE MOOD!
by: Winston Mount-Batten
Twenty three-old John Moody sat with his uniform on and his hands wrapped, nervously awaiting his Light Welterweight amateur boxing debut. The Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles was filled with boxing fans and the exciting action and roar of the crowd had Moody pacing the dressing room floor. Coaches Beezy Savoy and Beau Williford told John to settle down and save that nervous energy.
Moody entered the ring at about 10pm as did his opponent, a well built, undefeated (4-0) young boxer from Lake Charles. LaSalle received a huge ovation and Moody got a few polite hand claps from LaSalle's hometown crowd. Steven was ready for battle and when the bell rang he charged across the ring and threw a hard three punch combination. . .all of which landed to Moody's head. Visibly shaken Moody retreated and reset himself and began to box as LaSalle kept whaling away with hard punches which John either blocked, slipped or ducked. At the end of round one, Moody sat down in his corner and told coaches Williford and Savoy "that guy can really punch... HARD". Instructions from his smiling coaches were to box and give LaSalle angles and open up when the opportunity came.
The Ragin' Cajun boxer opened the second round behind a snapping right jab from his southpaw stance and had LaSalle backing up. With about thirty seconds left in the round Moody landed a sharp straight left to LaSalle's chin, flooring him for the mandatory eight count. After rising, Steven was immediately assaulted by hard punches and found himself yet again on the canvas. Referee Arthur Scott issued another mandatory eight count and seconds later the bell rang ending round two.
Moody started round three behind his jab and backed LaSalle to the ropes where he opened up with bludgeoning punches from both hands to force the referee to count a helpless LaSalle out.
An excited Moody received his trophy and the cheers from an appreciative crowd with a huge smile on his face. "That guy made my legs tremble and if I hadn't listened in the gym and been in great shape, I might have been on the canvas. My coaches Deirdre Gogarty, Beezy Savoy and Beau Williford told me I was ready and even though I was a bit worried, I knew they wouldn't let me box if I wasn't ready", said an in the mood, Moody.
Moody's teammate, Smokey Guidry, lost a very hard fought, very close decision to Tyronne Davidson of Lake Charles in the Middleweight division.

To Ron Guidry age is just a number - 72 - is a ripe old age only if you feel and look like seventy-two. In Guidry's case, he look's like a matinee idol and boxes like a teenager. Paul Soucy (70) of Detroit, MI. and William Cruse of Springfield, MO. will each attest to the fact that he boxes like a man HELL BENT on winning. Winning is what Ron did in Kansas, MO. at the World Ringside Boxing Tournament (04-08-09).
Guidry defeated the 2008 World Champion, Soucy in the semi-finals by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Ron dominated Soucy the entire match and scored a clean second round knockdown from a devastating left hook to the body followed by a hard straight right to the head, causing Soucy to fall flat on his back. Credit to Soucy's determination and conditioning he was able to rise before the count of ten and finish a hard fought battle.
Cruse, who was Ron's opponent in the championship was as fit as a fiddle and ready to fight. Again, Guidry, was the boss for the entire bout, scoring a third round standing eight count. William Cruse acknowledged defeat as soon as the bell rang, by immediately raising Guidry's hand in victory. The judges again favored Guidry with a unanimous 5-0 decision.
"Having my children and two of my grandkids see me win the World Title at age seventy-two, will give them some great stories to tell about their grandfather in years to come. My wife (Jean) still thinks I am a little loony for boxing at my age, but she is still very proud of my accomplishment. I tell everyone that if you believe in yourself and your abilities, you can do things at seventy-two about as well as you could at eighteen. I never let the number - 72 - discourage me from trying new things and I believe my attitude and being around the young kid's at the Ragin' Cajun Amateur Boxing Club in Lafayette, helps keep me young. Age is just a number and I hope to celebrate many, many more numbers in the future", said a smiling Guidry.
Like his namesake, Ron Guidry the New York Yankees, Cy Young Award winning pitching star, this Ron Guidry used power, finesse and hard work to become a world champion!
Also crowned a 2009 World Ringside Champion is Patrick Neumann from New York. Neumann, boxing in the novice super heavyweight division, was coached to victory by Ragin’ Cajun A.B.C. head coach Beau Williford. (Neumann won the 2009 Louisiana Governor’s Games in Lafayette last June, and is the son of famed professional Referee Randy Neumann.)

FRANCISCO "PONCHO" MONCIVIAS
March 27, 1984-July 25, 2004
REST IN PEACE
The USA Boxing Southern Association's prayers and condolences go out to the Moncivias family of Laurel, Mississippi.
The tragic and unexpected death of a fine young man, Francisco "Poncho" Moncivias, saddens all who knew him. "Poncho" was a big, good-looking kid with dynamite in both hands and plenty of heart. In 2004 "Poncho" won the National Junior Olympic Super Heavyweight Championship and in 2005 he brought home the USA Boxing National Under-19 Championship.
An easy going, well mannered young man who was the kind of kid you did not have to worry about on team trips. Always a smile on his face and an encouraging word for his teamates.
"Poncho", we at the Southern Association will miss that big smile, but we know that smile will light up the HEAVENS.
THE ORIGINAL RON GUIDRY
NOT A BASEBALL PLAYER BUT A REAL HOME RUN HITTER
Winston Mount-Batten
Handsome, articulate, well-built, athletic, a true Southern Gentleman and Lafayette born and bred. Sound familiar? It should, the original is all of the above and the other Ron Guidry is made from the same mold. Though not related, these two fine men share World Championship hardware; one has two World Series Rings in baseball for the New York Yankees, and the other owns the 2007 Ringside World Championship Belt in boxing.
Ron Guidry, the boxer, is seventy two years-old and preparing to try and win another championship and add to the legacy of the name. "I won my first LoUiSiAna Golden Gloves Championship when I was a junior at Lafayette High in 1955. My opponent in the finals was the acclaimed Pat Pastor, who was considered to be one of the finest pure boxers to ever come out of Louisiana. Pat had been a champion several times and was favored to beat me. I knew I was in with a very skillful boxer and would have to rely on my power if I wanted to win. In the first round I caught Pat with a tremendous right hand to the chin and was lucky that he was unable to beat the count. I remember the headline in the newspaper the next day read "UNHERALDED RON GUIDRY SHELLS HEAVILY FAVORED PAT PASTOR TO WIN STATE GOLDEN GLOVES". I was the runner-up in ‘55 and ‘56 and then entered the US Army and won the 7th. Corp All-Army Championship in ‘59 and ‘60 while I was stationed in Europe. I also won the All-Army Pistol Shooting Championship in ‘58 and ‘59. "In 1961 I came home from the Army and entered the State Golden Gloves and won. I then entered Louisiana Technical College and got a degree in drafting. I decided that now that I was married I needed to make a living for my family and boxing became a thing of the past. I took up golf and became a pretty good golfer (a handicap of seven) and in 1999 and 2000 I qualified for the National Senior Olympic Golf Championship and wound up in second place both years. In 2002 and 2004 I won the Louisiana State Senior Four-Ball Championship in the 65-69 age group, and in 2007 and 2008 I won the Louisiana State Senior 70 and older Championship. "A friend of mine told me that USA Boxing had come up with a format called Masters Boxers for people over the age of thirty five. The weight divisions were the same but the age divisions were in five year increments, 40-45, 45-50, etc... That was in late April of 2007 and I decided to make a come back after being out of the ring for forty six years. My wife Jean and my children (Ron, Jr., Simone, Shannon and Jay) initially thought that I had lost my mind. They gave me all the negatives about my age and everything else, and nearly talked me out of entering the World Ringside Boxing Championship's in Kansas City, Missouri. The also reminded me that I might get my pretty face messed up and not be able to appear in anymore movies except as maybe Quasimodo! (Ron has appeared in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Brad Pitt, The Dukes of Hazard with Burt Reynolds, Race To Glory with Christopher Lloyd, and All The King’s Men with Sean Penn.) With only three months to prepare myself, I went right to work on my conditioning and got myself ready to spar with real live competition. I was amazed at how well I did and then I went on to beat Paul Soucy of Detroit, Michigan in the finals of the 70-75 year-old age division to win the Ringside World Championship. In 2008 I again made it to the finals of the same tournament and lost a split decision to Soucy for the belt. The crowd thought I won as they booed the decision and I felt that I had won, but the judges believed differently". "For 2009 World Championship I am working harder than ever to try and make it to the finals and hopefully face Soucy again in a rubber match. I drive from my home in Baton Rouge, where I have lived for the past thirty seven years, to Lafayette to train with Beau Williford at the Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club. I spar with the guys, and Joe Almanza a seventeen year-old 2008 National Junior Golden Gloves Champion, gives me great work. The kid's in the gym thought I was nuts when I first came. They were all in agreement that I would get destroyed the first time I sparred. During that first sparring session they all stopped to watch and before long they were shouting out instructions to me and cheering me on. After sparring was over the whole gym gave Joe and I a round of applause, that was very inspiring and hopefully they will realize you should never be fooled by the white hair". It has been said that sometimes it's all in the name. Well Ron Guidry is a name that will live in boxing and baseball lore for years to come and could not be worn by two finer fellows! FONTENOT HAS FUN
By: Winston Mount-Batten
Thirteen year-old rising Breaux Bridge High ninth grader, Chance Fontenot of the Ragin' Cajun Amateur Club had some fun in his boxing match last night (July 18) in Montague, LoUiSiAna, while taking on big puncher Shane Sellers.
Sellers known for the punching power in his right hand (he scored a 32 second KO in the finals of the LoUiSiAna State Golden Gloves to win the championship) came out of his corner intent on landing his power punch and trying to make an early evening of this 105 lb. match-up. Fontenot boxed beautifully using a sharp left jab and lateral movement to keep Sellers in check. Round two was a repeat of the previous round with Chance using his left jab to set up two and three punch combinations and frustrate Sellers. Determined to win, sellers fired off his entire arsenal at Fontenot in the third, but his bombs only stirred the air. Chance just keept peppering Sellers with lefts and rights and made the scoring academic as the judges deemed Fontenot the winner by (3-0) unanimous decision.
Eleven year-old rising sixth grader at Maurice Elementary School, Gavin Stowe of the Rgain Cajun's was victorious over Dandrakus Joseph by unanimous decision. Hunter Marvin and Jessie "The Giant Killer" Fletcher of the Ragin Cajun's were unable to get matched-up.
TWO IN A ROW FOR.....STOWE BY: Winston mount-Batten
Still celebrating his victory in the LA./MS. Junior Golden Gloves Championships, Gavin Stowe climbed through the ropes again on Saturday night (July 18) in Montague, LoUiSiAna and was again victorious.
A rising sixth grader at Maurice Elementary School, the eleven year-old Stowe of the Ragin' Cajun Amateur Boxing Club, took on Dandrakus Joseph of the Frog Capital Boxing Club in Rayne, LA., in the seventy five pound weight division.
At the sound of the bell signaling the start of round one, Gavin immediately went on the offensive and landed two hard left jabs and just missed a hard straight right. Joseph was full of fight and these two young boys went at it tooth and nail for the entire first round. Round two saw Stowe continue to apply pressure and keep Joseph on the retreat. The action was heated in round three, but Gavin would not be refused and ended the bout with a solid right cross to Joseph's jaw. The judges were all in agreeance and Gavin was awarded a unanimous (3-0) decision.
Rising Breaux Bridge freshman, thirteen year-old Chance Fontenot, of the Ragin' Cajun's won a unanimous decision over hard punching Shane Sellers in the 105 lb. weight division.
Jesse "The Giant Killer" Fletcher and Hunter Marvin were unable to get matched up.

"JESSE THE GIANT KILLER"
Winston Mount-Batten
Four feet and five inches tall, seventy nine pounds and a heart as big as the world. That describes nine year old Jesse Fletcher, a rising fourth grader at S.J. Montgomery Midle School. Boxing for the Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club, young Jesse was having just his second boxing match at the LoUiSiAna Governors Games Boxing Tournament at Lafayette High and was matched with the more experienced Paiton Richard of Westlake, LA. in the finals of the 9-10 year-old, 75-80 lb. weight division. At stake was the prestigious Governors Games championship belt and bragging rights as to who is the best 75-80 pounder in Louisiana.
Giving up nearly 10" in height and several inches in reach, Jesse was faced with a real dilema. How to get inside the height and reach of Richard and be able to land a punch. His coaches, Beau Williford and Deirdre Gogarty instructed Jesse to move his head when Richard jabbed and step inside to shorten the distance. Once there he was told he must cut loose with his punches and try to stay inside as long as possible. The crowd thought they were going to see a taller boxer, in Richard, give Jesse a boxing lesson. For about thirty seconds of the first round that is exactly what happened. Coach Williford shouted at Jesse to move his head and step inside and that is what Jesse did. Once inside Jesse reallly cut loose with a flurry of about twenty punches to the head and body of Paiton. the referee stepped in and issued a standing eight count to Richard. When the boxers resumed action, Jesse attcked with a flourish to finish the first one minute round. Round two saw Jesse immediately go on the attack and again the referee was force to give Richard a standing eight count. Jesse pounced on Paiton and landed a stunning right hand that staggerd his opponent badly, forcing the referee to stop the bout and award the victory and the championship belt to Fletcher. The roar of the crowd in appreciation of Jesse's grit and determination nearly lifted the roof off the Lafayette High gym.
Ragin' Cajun boxer, Wilfred Fuselier and Antonio Mignelli of Grand Bois, LA. had an all out war, as these two big heavyweights (178-201 lbs.) went toe to toe for nine minutes of heated action. The taller Fuselier gave up his height and fought Mignelli on the inside and then moved outside to use his long jab. Mignelli a very skillfull mike Tysonesque boxer applied constant pressure and every puch he threw had "bad intentions" written all over it. Punch after punch was thrown and landed by both young men, but wilfred's sharper punching and better boxing skills seemed to have the edge after two furious rounds. Both men came out for the third and final round with a look of "this is it" on their faces. Fuselier immediately landed a solid left-right combination to the head and Mignelli returned fire with a terrific double left hook to the body and head. The punches flew in bunches and neither man took a backward step. The crowd was roaring and just before the fianl bell Fuselier landed a solid right hand to the head of Mignelli. The suspence was as thick as the mud in the Atchafalaya Basin as the boxers and crowd awaited the judges decision. Whwn ring announcer, Bob moore announced that Fuselier hab been awarded a unanimous decision the crowd again nearly raised the roof of the gym.
All the way from New York City a young man and his father traveled to enter the Governor's Games Boxing Tournament. Patrick Neumann, all 6'6'' and 256 lbs. of him and his father Randy Neumann, a top rated heavyweight form the Golden Age of Heavyweights, (the 1970's) and a world class referee (HBO, Showtime, ESPN, etc.). Patrick entered the super heavyweight division and boxed undefeated Kelton Hayes of Jena, LA. on Friday night. Neumann dominated the first round and then scored a sensational KO about 30 seconds into round two. On Sunday afternoon in the finals Patrick presented his father, Randy with a great Fathers Day gift, when he scored a one round stoppage of over Jared McCarty of Columbia, LA. to win the coveted Governors Games championship belt. All in all, a great visit to LoUiSiAna for these Yankees!
Some of the boxers from Shreveport spent most of their time on Sunday trying to intimidate Ragin' Cajun boxer, Eric Bui. Eric a twelve year old Scott Middle School rising seventh grader was scheduled to box Shreveport's Bobby Ashley in the finals of the 11-12 year-old, 90 lb. division. The intimidation factor did not work! Bui handily won all three rounds to garner the Governors Games championship belt.
Fourteen year old Chance Fontenot a rising freshman at Breaux Bridge High easily swept rounds one and two of his match-up wit Desmond Withers of Lake Charles, LA. in the 13-14 year-old, 90 lb. division. Round three saw Withers give his all and he made the Ragin' Cajun boxer work extemely hard to preserve his victory and lay claim to the Governors Games championship belt.
The LoUiSiAna Governors Games Boxing Tournament was a huge success with boxers from as far away as New York City entering. Games Director Rudy Macklin (former two time LSU All-American and Atlanta Hawks star) was more than pleased with the skill of the young boxers and the excitement exuded by the crowds. "Beau Williford and his team from the Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club did a fantastic job of organizing and piutting on a great event", said Macklin.

Fourteen year-old Dayanie Charles, an incoming freshman at Carencro High, was awarded the SILVER MEDAL today in Denver, Colorado. Dy battled toe to toe with Angelica Sanchez of Alberquerue, New Mexico for the 106 lb. female USA Boxing National Junior Olympic Championship.
Boxing in the 15-16 year-old age group Dy met the hard punching, very experienced, Sanchez head on and boxed gallantly. Down on the scorecards after two rounds the "Princess" left her corner in round three with a vengeance, knowing she had to score a knockout to win. Sanchez boxed defenseively trying to protect her lead. Dy took the advice of her corner and went on the attack, but was unable to overcome Sanchez's lead.
"It was an honor to represent the State of LoUiSiAna at a national tournament. I am sorry that I disappointed my family friends and fans. I will be back next year better prepared to box on the national level. I plan to begin my preparations next week at the Governors Games at Lafayette High", said "Princess DY".
RAGIN' CAJUNS WIN TEAM TROPHY
The Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club won eight of eleven boxing matches in Sorrento, LA. on Saturday afternoon. The club also won the Team Trophy.
The afternoon got off to a bad start as eleven year old Gavin Stowe lost a hard fought battle to Donivan Dassinger of Jeanerette, LA. over three rounds in 75 lb. weight class.
Female boxer, Christine Bouchereau, set the winning tone as she out boxed and out fought Jasmine Patton of Gulfport, MS. over three rounds in the 132 lb. division.
Fourteen year-old Hunter Marvin, used his slick boxing skills along with a hard right hand to dominate Desmin Withers of Westlake, LA. over three rounds in the 112 lb. division.
Bryce Landry, a thirteen year-old 95 pounder, took immediate control of his bout with twelve year-old Dominick Dassinger of Jeanerette, LA. winning over three rounds.
Twelve year old Eric Bui and Dwight Lee of McComb, MS. battled for three exciting rounds with Bui ultimately winning the fight. This bout was in the 95 lb. weight class.
Nicky Vo, a thirteen year old female boxer fought Dasha Holmes of Wilson, LA. to win over three rounds in the 147 lb.weight class.
Shane Fonenot, a thirty one year old with only one bout (a loss) on his record was determined to get on the winning track along with his sons, Chance (thirteen year-old) and Kade (nine years-old). Fontenot faced David Miranda of Sorrento and totally dominated the bout scoring a third round TKO in the 152 lb. weight class.
Eugene Broussard was out boxed by Blaine Hull of Baton Rouge, LA. over three rounds in the 141 lb. weight division.
Wilfred Fuselier and Antonio Mignelli of Grand Bois, LA. had an all out war over four rounds in the Heavyweight (201 lb.) division. Mignelli using the Mike Tyson, peek-a-boo style and throwing devastating left hooks and uppercuts met his match as Fuselier boxed like a vintage Buster Douglas and kept Antonio on the end of hard and fast left jabs, followed by dangerous right hands. Fuselier was able to keep Mignelli at bay with his hard jab and won a unanimous decision over four two minute rounds.
Brandon Schoeffler lost by an upsetting split decision against Tyler Nixon of Westlake, LA. These thirteen year-olds boxed in the 85 lb. weight division.
2008 and 2009 Louisiana Golden Gloves Middleweight Champion, Chad Trahan was the Boxer of the Night as he ruled the fight against Jason Taylor of Grand Bois, LA. Southpaw, Trahan used straight and hard right hands to the body causing Taylor to lower his guard. Suddenly a straight left hand to the chin dropped Taylor to his knees for a mandatory eight count. A right hook to the chin again dropped Taylor for another eight count and at the bell he was staggered by another straight left hand. Round two saw Trahan immediately go on the defensive and another knockdown forced referee, Gerard Adams to halt the bout. This middleweight (165 lbs.) bout was deemed the fight of the thirty three-bout card. Trahan is now preparing for the USA Boxing national Championships to be held in Denver, Co., June 8-13 and the LoUiSiAna Governor’s Games, which will be held at Lafayette High School, June 19-21.
Ragin' Cajun boxers Smokey Guidry, Angel "Pito" Avalos and Dominique Bowie were unable to be matched up in Sorrento.
Golden Gloves: Nelams family is winning fights in and out of ring
There will be some big rocking going on in Little Rock, Ark., over the next four days as top amateur boxers from five states collide in the Regional Golden Gloves Tournament to determine who will qualify for the national championships.
Among the best young fighters from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee that will be competing, six of the 11 weight class winners from the Louisiana Golden Gloves Tournament recently held in Lafayette are all from the Acadiana area. Specifically, they represent Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club and Shelton LeBlanc's Backstreet Boxing Club in Carencro.
"I get excited every year, but Lafayette should be proud and they should know this is an exciting time for boxing in our area," said RCBC coach Beau Williford. "This is an outstanding contingent of young men. They are exemplary individuals who happen to be great boxers."
And Williford knows boxing. Forty years in the sport, a member of boxing's Hall of Fame and head of the Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club, he knows the rarity of a six-class sweep.
"Winning the state title is special, taking a regional title is tremendous, and just making it to the National Golden Gloves Tournament is an honor," says Williford, who's son Christian was the last regional winner two years ago.
But a fighter with a unique story among the contingent gunning for a spot in the national tournament is Comeaux High School senior Timothy Nelams, Louisiana's 119-pound bantam weight champion.
As the tournament opens today and runs through Sunday, Nelams will be in the biggest fights of his life as he aims to become a regional champion. At the same time, facing a different opponent, his dad David at age 48 will also be fighting - for his life.
David Nelams has a rare form of terminal cancer, Carcinoid Syndrome. Nine years ago he was given nine months to live, but remains as vibrant and active as ever. In talking to Nelams - who has been coaching boxers in the Acadiana area for years, including Blake "The Candyman" Prevost in his younger days - one would never know about his disease.
"David's a tough old dog," said Williford. "And we are so glad to have him here helping all our young kids. He's a great coach."Coaching his son, says David, has given him a renewed reason to wake up and fight each day.
"Some people have good and bad days," he says. "Every day I wake up and thank God. They're all good days, some are just better than others. God and my family are what's most important, not my disease."
And that's all the more reason that Timmy strives to live in the moment.
"I'm glad for the time I have right now," he said.
Coach Beau Williford's Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club will have four fighters that will be competing for spots at the national championship tournament when the Regional Golden Gloves are held in Little Rock, Ark., this week.
The Louisiana Golden Gloves team that will compete in the regional tournament:
Backstreet Boxing Club: Quentin Benjamin (125 pounds), Kaylan Alfred (106), Keithlan Franklin (132), Henry Clay (112).
Other Louisiana fighters: Johnathan Guidry (Super Hwt., Grand Bois), Tyrone Davis (Light Hwt., Monroe), Roland Molinere (Light Hwt., Grand Bois).

In their first road trip as Golden Meadow's Bayouside boxing club the boys won two fights and had a very good showing in the other three. The show was sponsored by the Future Champs boxing club and took place at the Hub City boxing gym in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
In the first bout for Bayouside the teams sole veteran member Steven Lyons (6 fights, 178lbs) put on a boxing clinic against Pearl boxing club member Erik Mayo (3 fights, 183lbs). Lyons out punched Mayo in every round and dropped him in round 3 with a well placed straight right hand. Lyons would go on to win a unanimous decision.
Bayouside's youngest and smallest member "Tiny" Tony Bailey (12 year old 97lbs) lost a split decision to a West Mobile boxing club fighter who had one previous bout. After a shaky start "Tiny" settled down and controlled the rest of the bout with his right hand. One judge scored the bout 23-18 for Bailey while the other two sided with the West Mobile boxer.
Also in his first bout Bayouside's Bobby Wescovich (15 years old 135lbs) was out hustled by Artis Snar (15 years old 136lbs) also of the West Mobile boxing club. Both fighters traded shots throughout the bout. Wescovich held a lead going into round 3 but Snar hustled and won the round and winning the bout.
In what could be considered the "upset of the night" Bayouside member Victor Hernandez (15 years old 108lbs) won his first bout via split decision over Ragin' Cajun boxing club member Chance Fontenot (14 years old, 99lbs, 7 fights).Fontenot came out firing but Hernandez weathered the storm and out worked his more experienced opponent to win a decision.
The oldest member of the Bayouside team Randy Cheramie (24 years old, 151lbs) lost a very close decision to 10 fight veteran from the Backstreet boxing team. Cheramie landed the cleaner shots, but his opponent held the speed and experience advantage and that was enough to earn the decision.
CAN HE HEAR THE BELL?
BY
Winston Mount-Batten
Nine year-old Kade Fontenot, a fourth grader at Parks Primary School has a disability that would seem to limit his ability to become involved in organized sports. Kade is 95% hearing impaired and wears specially developed, very expensive hearing aid’s in order to be able to hear.
Fontenot has refused to let this disability affect his life and along with older brothers Chance (fourteen) and Trey (eleven) is a sports fanatic. In 2008 he was the starting linebacker on the Breaux Bridge Jr. League Cowboys football team. However football came in a distant second when it came to the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Chance and become an amateur boxer.
On his first visit to the Ragin’ Cajun Amateur Boxing Club, Kade became enamored with the sport of boxing. He declared that his quest in life was to become a boxing champion. Informed by his parents Shane and Carrie Fontenot that the Ragin’ Cajun Club, head coach, Beau Williford would require that he must have at least a “C” average in his school grades and no less than a “B” in conduct, in order to participate. Kade was barely passing in school and his conduct grade was nothing to be proud of. His reply was “Okay if that’s what I have to do I will work hard and bring my grades and conduct up.”
On Christmas morning of 2008 the Fontenot’s informed Kade that along with the games and clothes he had received from Santa Claus, there was a very special gift in a small package for him. The present was his USA Boxing Passbook for 2009 as a reward for raising his grades to “A’s” and “B’s” and his conduct to an “A”. Deserting his other Christmas gifts Kade said “I will work really hard and I will try to get good enough to enter the 2009 Louisiana State Golden Gloves Tournament.”
January 1st was Kade’s first day in the gym as a member and he worked like a Trojan to learn all he could. The month of January saw coaches Deirdre Gogarty (former Undisputed Women’s Featherweight Champion), Kevin Babineaux, Beezy Savoy, Greg Landry and father and coach Shane work with Kade on every aspect of boxing. He showed improvement daily and on February 7 at the Unetta Gym in Hattiesburg, Mississippi had his amateur boxing debut.
Hattiesburg’s own Trevton Oliver stood across the ring in the blue corner and appeared extremely confident. Oliver was undefeated and hoped to gain his second victory at Kade’s expense. Referee, Arthur Scott was informed that Kade might not be able to hear the sound of the bell (no hearing aids in boxing) and Scott immediately instructed the timekeeper of the situation, so that he could let him know when there was ten seconds left in the round. He could be sure to move close to the action and separate the combatants if necessary.
Round one saw Oliver start very fast and try to take the battle to Fontenot immediately. Oliver rushed across the ring and nearly caught Kade in his own corner.
After a close first round, which saw Fontenot return to his corner with a bloody nose the bout was taken over by Kade. Following his right jab from his southpaw stance he aggressively took control and put every ounce of his seventy pounds behind every punch to clearly win the second round.
Round three was a repeat of the exciting second round with Kade hustling forward to take the battle to his opponent and land as many scoring blows as possible.
The bout was over and Fontenot’s fate was in the hands of the judges (who were not aware of Fontenot’s hearing impairment). The ring announcer, Warren Migues, kept the suspense alive as he slowly stated that, “the winner in the................. red corner is …..Kade Fontenot! Williford and Kade’s father Shane joined the boisterous crowd in their approval of the judge’s decision. Kade was awarded a trophy which he hugged to his chest as his eyes searched the arena for his mother, Carrie.
Adversity has been at Kade’s doorstep since birth, but he has learned that that hard work, discipline and dedication can defeat adversity just as he defeated Oliver in his amateur boxing debut.
Kade’s first question to coach Williford as he gazed gleefully up was, “Do you think I can box in the Golden Gloves now, coach”? Williford smiled, ran his hand over the top of Kade’s head and nearly tearing up replied, “I believe you can, son!
Oh yes, Kade could hear the bell due to its high pitched sound.
In other Ragin’ Cajun bouts in Hattiesburg:
Kaleb Vice defeated Cantrell Singleton of Baton Rouge, LA., by unanimous decision.
Joe Almanza defeated Davarious Greene of New Orleans, LA. by unanimous decision.
Chance Fontenot lost by split decision to Valenzuela Hernandez of Cut-Off, La.
Brandon Schoeffler lost by split decision to Johnnie West of Baton Rouge, LA.
Bishop Campbell lost by unanimous decision to Javon Stuart of Gulfport, MS.
The Ragin’ Cajun Club will return to Hattiesburg on February 21.
LOUISIANA GOLDEN GLOVES RETURNS TO LAFAYETTE MARCH 20-22
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana’s top amateur boxers will be participating in the state’s premier boxing event March 20-22 when the Louisiana Golden Gloves comes to Lafayette for the third consecutive year.
More than 200 boxers – from eight-year-olds up to age 70 and over – will descend on the Lafayette High School gymnasium for the three-day event that will qualify fighters for the Mid-South Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions later this year.
The event drew an overflow crowd to the Robichaux Center last year, and the move back to the Lafayette High gym – the Golden Gloves’ home in 2007 -- will more than double the seating capacity and provide more local sports fans with the opportunity to watch the non-stop action.
“We had 211 entrants last year,” said Beau Williford, head coach of Lafayette’s Ragin’ Cajun Boxing Club and local organizer for the event. “There aren’t regional qualifiers like there used to be, so we’ll get people from all over the state.”
The Golden Gloves is traditionally thought of as a youth organization, and a large number of the entrants will be taking part in the age 8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-16 divisions. But there are also divisions for boxers over age 16 and an open division, and for the first time a Masters division will be offered for amateurs age 35 and over.
That division could be one of the highlights of this year’s event, with former local Golden Gloves champions Ronald Guidry, Carrol Guilbeau, Charlie Richard, Paul Buswell, Sid Turner and others eligible to take part. Guidry, a part of Lafayette’s national Golden Gloves team champion in 1956, recently won the World Ringside Masters championship in the age 70-75 division, and Turner lost in last year’s World Ringside 70-75 championship bout.
“This is the first time that the Masters division has been offered in Golden Gloves in Louisiana,” Williford said, “so we’d like to have a good representation there and we know the bouts will be fun to watch for our fans.”
Fighters in the younger divisions may also take part in novice classifications if they have had less than 10 amateur fights, and there is also a super novice division for boxers over 19 with less than 10 bouts. All boxers in the competition, regardless of age and division, must be registered with USA Boxing, and Williford said that information on registering is available at 303 Macon Street just off Eraste Landry, or by calling 257-3501.
Participants in last year’s Golden Gloves competition spent approximately $200,000 during their trip to Lafayette on hotels, restaurants and entertainment, and tournament officials estimated that the event had an economic impact of nearly a half-million dollars on the Acadiana area. Those numbers should increase this year with the event moving from two to three days.
Winners of state titles advance to the Mid-South Golden Gloves event in Little Rock, Ark., to face fighters from Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee. The regional champions advance to the National Golden Gloves finals scheduled for Salt Lake City, Utah. Last year, 11 boxers who won state titles here advanced to the Mid-South, and four qualified for the national tournament.
Elimination bouts will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 20-21, with the open finals and other selected matches on Sunday, March 22. Bouts will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets for the event, both single-day and tournament passes, will go on sale March 1 at several outlets around Acadiana. In addition, 50 VIP ringside tables will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and information and reservations for tables is available from Williford at 257-3501 or Beldon Fox at 288-4052.

RAGIN' CAJUN BOXERS WIN TEAM TROPHY
Lafayette's Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club was victorious and brought home the Team Trophy in the first amateur boxing show of 2009. Four Cajun boxers competed and came a way with three dominant wins and on decision loss that was a travesty of judging.
Mr. Boxing Louisiana, Chad Trahan (164 lbs.) started the evening off with a well deserved decision victory over the only Louisiana boxer to beat Trahan in 2008, Allen Jones (163 lbs.) Chad boxed well in the first round and then put the pedal to the metal in rounds two and three. Jones from Carencro was game and gave a 100% effort but was outclassed in every departmant.
Kient Martin listened to Joel Baglio (2008 LA. Golden Gloves Champion) of Lake Charles talk trash before the boxing match and then went out and used a compacter on Baglio's mouth. Martin (134 lbs.) gave Baglio (139 lbs.) a boxing lesson that he will not soon forget. Baglio vowed to get revenge in the 2009 Louisiana Golden Gloves Championships at Lafayette High School on March 20, 21 and 22. Martin who serves in the Louisiana National Guard hopes that he is not deployed before the Golden Gloves and said he would be pleased to box Baglio then.
Jesse Patin (184 lbs.) was rocked from hard punches and worried that he was about to lose his debut amateur bout when out of nowhere he landed a vicious staright right followed by a left hook to deposit Lake Charles' Byron Mitchell, Jr (184 lbs.). on the canvas near the end of the first round. Mitchell struggled, but arose to go back on the attack and have Patin backing up by rounds end. Mitchell flew from his stool at the sound of the bell for round two and again looked to be taking control of the match. Suddenly about midway through the round Patin cut loose with a flurry of punches and Mitchell crashed to the floor in his own corner to be counted out by referee Arthur Scott. Mitchell, a real sportsman was singing the praises of Patin's punching power after he recovered.
Joe Alamanza, a senior at Acadiana High had a terrible first round but came back in rounds two and three to show Casey Adams of Cut-Off how to box. Joe (146 lbs.) totally dominated the second and third rounds only to have two of the three judges score in favor of Adams (152 lbs.) for a split decision win. Almanza who won the 2008 National Junior Golden Gloves championship was very dissapointed but hopes to meet Adams again.
The Ragin' Cajun Boxing Club will be in action on February 7th. in Hattiesburg as they prepare for the 2009 Louisiana Golden Gloves.
